Prague
Prague is the largest city and the capital of the Czech Republic. It is known predominantly for its historical elegance with the medieval castle and ancient buildings that are surrounded by traditional homes and businesses.
The city of Prague is essentially split into quarters of historical significance, although the naming system for the districts changes depending on who you are talking to. The most recognized is probably the ‘old’ naming system which names them by number. For example, the city centre is contained within the district of Praha 1 and has half of the city centre quarters within it.
While travelling around the city it is not uncommon to walk by a golden tower, bridge, church dome, and cathedral all in one trip as the city has taken great care to preserve its historical heritage and unique cultural significance. For this reason it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Europe.
Public transportation is very easy to use in Prague, and also very reliable, although many people also enjoy walking through the city to take in the sites of the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, which are two of the most historical districts of the city centre. While walking keep in mind that on the cobbled streets it is illegal to cross a street if the light is red and doing so will result in a harsh fine.
Most people use the tram and metro to get around the various Prague districts, which operate until midnight. The nice part about using the tram is that it arrives every few minutes and thus is not usually very crowded.
While in Prague some of the most popular tourist attractions include the historic centre of Old Town which has many monuments and buildings such as the Tyn Church and the Astronomical Clock.
Also worth making a trip to see is the Charles Bridge which crosses the Vltava, and has been in existence since the 14th century. There are plenty of entertainment opportunities around the bridge throughout the day for tourists to take part in.
A trip to Prague is not complete without a stop by the Prague Castle which is considered to be the oldest castle in the world and offers a lookout tower, which allows you to look out over the city of Prague, it is called the castle Picture Gallery for the views it gives. Also located in direct proximity to the castle are several museums and the Royal Garden.
Those who want to take in the magnificent shopping in Prague will want to head over to the New Town district in the city centre where Wenceslas Square is found. Here you can find many outside stalls as well as plenty of shops.
Also located in the Square is the National Museum which is well worth a few hours of your time. Down the street from the museum is also the main collection of trendy discos and clubs and is the best place to find nightlife in the city.
