WATERLOOPLEIN
Mon-Sat 09:00 - 17:00
Just behind City Hall this market is firmly aimed at tourists - stalls sell a lot of imported fabrics, sarongs, throws and so on. A lot of 'normal' market-style clothes and shows, but with a sprinkling of stalls selling collectibles and craft goods. Worth a look.

ALBERT CUYPMARKT
Albert Cuypstraat - Mon-Sat 09.30-17.30
Large general market stretching down a long wide street selling everything from food, linen and miscellaneous bargains.

ROMMELSMARKT
More indoor fleamarket than antique centre, this old warehouse building has several dozen dealers, many of whom just pile their items up on tables. Some interesting items, but you'll need to look for them carefully.

DE LOOIER ANTIQUE CENTER
Elandsgracht 109 11.00-17.00 Closed Friday
Rather more upmarket than the Rommelsmarkt, but only a street away. Glass booths and mini-shops fill this large space with dozens of dealers in toys (the best is HollandToys), ceramics, silver, furniture and more.

FURTHER INFORMATION
We travelled by Easyjet. A train from Schipol airport to Central Station takes 20 minutes and costs around £3.50 with a few pounds more for the taxi to the hotel. Trams, buses and walking are all options of course as Amsterdam is a very compact city. Everyone seems to speak perfect English, so you'd be very unlucky to get lost.

The Hotel Acro was just 200m from the Rijksmuseum and a short walk in to the heart of the city -clean and tidy, very affordable, nice breakfast, although the bed had this 3 inch raised wooden lip around it (to keep the thin mattress from sliding off?). Perhaps aimed at a younger market, but very acceptable. Ann Frank Huis, the Rijksmuseum and a Canal Trip are all essential of course. Just strolling round the canals is a lovely way to see the city - the architecture is on a very human scale. And we loved SATURNINO, a quirky but fabulous Italian restaurant on Reguliersdwarsstraat.
