Les Passages de Paris
The elegant glass-roofed shopping arcade can be seen in many cities. But the earliest and the most interesting variety can be found in just one place - Paris. The Passages de Paris are architectural survivors from a very specific period - just 60 years span the first and last, and only 19 survive today.
They are simultaneously a cross-section of building and retail history, a destination for shoppers and tourists, compelling evidence of the power of property speculation, a permanent result of technical developments in glass and wrought iron. Whatever your interest, you can spend many hours browsing through the arcades, passages and galeries that make up this segment of Parisian life.
This web site has three main purposes: [1] to record and share the history of these architectural treasures, demonstrating their proper place as influences in the development of the modern retail experience, [2] to provide an accurate and up-to-date shopping guide so visitors can explore and discover for themselves the amazing range of boutiques, galleries, cafes and other establishments tucked away in these hidden corners of Paris, and [3] to provide an updateable reference section and picture archive for my forthcoming book on the Parisan Covered Passage.
Suggestions, comments and corrections are all welcome. And to show that I am not exclusively fixated on Paris, the More Passages page provides details on many more beautiful arcades, galleries and shopping destinations around the world.
